Back in January I submitted a piece to the Cowichan Valley Art Council's annual fine art show. This was my first time submitting work to this show, and I was quite excited to enter and to be accepted to show my work. However, as the day got closer to bring the work in, I realized that the piece I was planning on entering was not going to be available for this show. With a last minute change, 'Big Doug' stepped up to fill the void.
I didn't know that there would be prizes awarded at the Cowichan Valley show, so when my name was called for a 'Jurors Choice' award I was floored. 'Big Lonely Doug' has been a signature piece for me from the beginning. While the plate is technically flawed in the process, and a plate that I nearly tossed into a gravel pit, it has become one of my favorite photographs. It shows that even when things are not working the way that you want, don't give up, it will work out. There is beauty in the flaws, so embrace them, accept them, learn to love them, for it is in the flaws where our uniqueness lives.
Big thanks to the Cowichan Valley Art Council for putting on a fantastic show, and thanks to Juror, Ellen McCluskey for seeing the beauty and grace in 'Big Lonely Doug'.
